Present video is about Mahmood Farshchian, an Iranian master who is famous as an artist who paints visual narrative in his unique style of combining Persian miniature paintings with Western painting technique. The symbolic paintings of Farshchian stand apart from most Western Symbolists the way he brings Eastern poetry and prose into his art. He combines Persian classical literature, the Quran, and the Old Testaments with his own deep imagination. In his paintings, Farshchian brings history, legend, and fairytales to life. He narrates the fables in a sensual and poetic way through his own brilliant colors and wavy brushstrokes. Farshchian begins his painting with lines that he applies with a pencil or a round brush dipped in thinned paint. His lines are beyond just framing forms. They express texture, weight, and hardness or softness of the subject. He then applies his colors with soft, short and rhythmic brushstrokes to create identity and depth. Farshchian’s motifs flow across his paintings like the breeze. He creates round and curved spaces using soft and powerful lines. His colors are in motion. They seem to be moving in a melodic dance. They look like waves in a shallow river. His compositions are circular. His figures and backgrounds merge together to whisper secrets, hidden messages and inner hints to the viewers. He shows us how it feels to meander in the pathways of the garden of paradise. During my own teens, I fell in love with Farshchian’s bright and wavy colors, which I could not see in other paintings. Living not too far from him in Isfahan, I was fortunate to spend times at his presence and learn from the master much of what I reflect in my own art. Farshchian’s paintings for me was like a dream that brought legends of the past, into a rhythmic dance in his colorful gardens and verandas. I enjoyed the way he treats tree branches, leaves, and trunks as if they are animals. Mahmoud Farshchian was born in Isfahan. He studied miniature paintings at the Isfahan Academy of Fine Arts. After several years of studying the works of prominent Western painters in Europe, he developed his own unique style that brings together Eastern and Western painting techniques. In his return to Iran, he was appointed the executive Director of National Arts and a professor of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. Meanwhile, He continued creating paintings that helped to spread his artistic reputation in the country and beyond. Farshchian has been influential in introducing Iranian art to the international art scene. He has lectured, taught and exhibited at numerous universities and art institutes. There have been six books and countless articles published about Farshchian's works. His paintings can be found in many private and public collections. The Farshchian Museum in Tehran presently holds over 70 of his artworks. Outside Iran, Farshchian's paintings have also been exhibited in major cities around the world, including Paris, New York, and Chicago to name a few.
