#ConservationInTheMiddle

"Conservation in the Middle” - Conservation is at the crossroads, trapped in increasingly heated debates on economic growth, ‘sustainable development’, and social justice. It is clearer than ever that the science and practice of conservation cannot continue as-is: something has to change. In this series of 5 reflective videos, 4 scientists – Venkatachalam Suri, Rohan Arthur, MD Madhusudan and Harini Nagendra, working on conservation from multiple standpoints for several decades, explore the complexities of conservation from multiple angles. We dive into the historical context of conservation, the tensions between conservation and pressures of development, and the challenges of balancing ecosystem protection with community stewardship and livelihood needs. Our discussions point to the gaps and flaws that plague many existing practices of conservation, advocating for a more nuanced approach that integrates social justice, indigenous knowledge, and community involvement in environmental stewardship. Cinematography: Vikrant Anand, Ankit Mangal, Prasad MD, Neppolian Pandian Editing: Vikrant Anand Speaker Profiles: MD Madhusudan, a conservation scientist, has spent over 25 years exploring the relationship between wildlife and human communities. As co-founder of the Nature Conservation Foundation, he helped shape a science-driven, socially responsible approach to conservation in India. His research focuses on human-wildlife interactions, informing both ecological studies and policy. Collaborating with communities, governments, and scientists, he has developed conservation strategies that balance nature and human needs. Currently a Visiting Scientist at NCBS and Visiting Professor at Ashoka University, he studies India’s conservation history and changing landscapes, working to bridge research and practice for coexistence. Suri Venkatachalam has worked with conservationists for more than three decades while himself meandering through condensed matter physics, neuroscience, ecology, drug discovery and complex systems science. A career entrepreneur he has been the founder and CEO of Connexios Life Sciences, a co-founder of Achira Labs, and a co-founder of Metahelix Life Sciences. He is an Adjunct Faculty at the Nature Conservation Foundation and an Advisor to the Snow Leopard Trust, and has been helping mentor eco-social enterprises around various parts of India and central Asia. His current work includes photo-documenting nature in Indian cities and researching Social Ecological histories of “peripheral” places in general and Lakshadweep (with Rohan Arthur) in particular. He serves on the board of Foundation for Neglected Diseases Research and Black Baza Coffee. Rohan Arthur, a senior scientist and founding trustee of the Nature Conservation Foundation, leads its Oceans and Coasts program, studying human-wildlife interactions in marine environments. His research focuses on coral reef resilience amid climate change and overfishing. Through his Pew fellowship, he explored the role of fish in reef stability, using India’s Lakshadweep Archipelago as a case study. He worked with local fishing communities to assess the impact of shifting fishing practices on reef health. Harini Nagendra is Director of Research Centre, and Director, School of Climate Change and Sustainability, at Azim Premji University. Her work focuses on urban ecology, forest conservation and climate change amongst other themes. She is a well-known public speaker and writer on issues of urban sustainability in India Her books include Nature in the City: Bengaluru in the Past, Present and Future; Cities and Canopies: Trees of Indian Cities; So Many Leaves, and Shades of Blue: Connecting the Drops in India’s Cities. She also writes the acclaimed Bangalore Detectives Club series, a set of historical mysteries set in 1920s Bangalore. #ConservationInTheMiddle #Conservation #Environment #Sustainability #ThinkDeeper #BigPicture #ConservationInTheMiddle, #Conservation, #Environment, #Sustainability, #BigQuestions, #CriticalThinking, #Reflection, #DeeperThinking, #Community, #HistoryOfConservation, #EconomyAndConservation, #KnowledgeAndPower, #AlternativeApproaches, #EnvironmentalJustice, #Harininagendra, #Surivenkatachalam, #mdmadhusudan, #rohanarthur
