Erik Morales vs Paulie Ayala November 16, 2002 HBO Broadcast

I often got the feeling when watching many of HBO's Erik Morales fights that they, they being the commentators, just didn't care for the guy all that much. They often would shit on his previous fight performances, an example of which would be his first go round with Guty Espadas Jr and then his fight with In Jin Chi of Korea. Never minding the fact that both fighters were legitimate champions at some points in their careers. My point I guess is that it was nice to hear them not really doing that during this fight too much. Maybe they really couldn't work it in on account of this being an absolute demolition job performed on a very, very good fighter in Paulie Ayala. Yes, Ayala was the smaller man, but the beating he takes here is so thorough that, in my opinion, this had much, MUCH more to do with being outclassed by an obviously very prepared Morales. I think fans of Morales enjoy this fight because of that aspect. At the height of his game, when truly trained, conditioned, and with the proper motivation/desire, this is the Morales that would show up. And this Morales is loads of trouble for many ATG featherweights. Please enjoy the fight, if you should choose to do so, Mario It is unfortunate that a higher quality video of this fight appears to have not found it's way on to YouTube as of yet. After I upload this version, I will not be surprised in any manner if shortly afterwards fate will only then get that better version up somewhere. Seems to be how things often work for me since getting into this YouTube thing. via http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxin... "He's a very heavy hitter, punches very hard" Paulie Ayala Mexico's Erik Morales won the vacant WBC featherweight crown with a unanimous 12-round decision against Paulie Ayala. Morales, who lost the title to Marco Antonio Barrera in his last fight, scored repeatedly with right hands against his smaller opponent. Ayala fought hard until the end and never went down. But his left eye was swollen shut and he took a beating in the 12th round as Morales pinned him on the ropes and landed punches almost at will. With just a few seconds left in the final round it looked like referee Kenny Bayless might stop the fight but it went to the final bell for a decision. Ayala was fighting for the first time at 126 pounds (56.7 kilograms) and although both fighters weighed the same, Morales clearly packed the harder punches. "He's a very heavy hitter, punches very hard. He also had a reach advantage over me and was catching me at the end of his punches," said Ayala. Two judges scored it 117-111 for Morales while the third scored it 116-112. On the undercard, champion Jorge Arce retained the WBC light flyweight title with a third-round technical knockout of Mexican compatriot Augustin Luna. Welterweight prospect Dmitriy Salita remained unbeaten by stopping an outmatched Ron Gladden midway through the first round of a scheduled four-round fight. And Mexico's Guty Espadas won a split decision over Clarence "Bones" Adams, who was bloodied by a head butt midway through the fight. Espadas landed the cleaner punches to win on two of the three scorecards in the featherweight fight.
