Turn-based JRPGs didn’t stop being made — they just stopped all coming from the same place. Over the last few years, I’ve played a lot of modern turn-based JRPGs that don’t get talked about nearly as much as they should, mostly because they aren’t coming from Square Enix. And that’s what I wanted to focus on in this video. This isn’t a ranking based on sales or popularity. It’s just a collection of modern turn-based JRPGs that, in my experience, really understand the genre — whether that’s through smart combat systems, thoughtful pacing, or simply respecting the player’s time. Some of these games are well known. Some are a lot more niche. But all of them left an impression on me for one reason or another. There’s also one modern turn-based JRPG that a lot of people expect to see on lists like this that I intentionally left out — not because it’s bad, but because I don’t think it represents where turn-based combat is at its strongest right now. I’m genuinely curious where you land on that. Let me know in the comments which modern turn-based JRPG you’d add to this list, or which one you think I completely missed. Thanks for watching — and as always, thanks for being here. Check me out on Twitter: Twitter.com/Shinky_Plays Check me out on Twitch: Twitch.tv/shinky Join my discord: / discord
