Why does pain sometimes continue even after an injury has healed? How do emotions like fear or anxiety make pain worse? And what practical strategies can help people manage pain effectively? In this episode of Curiosities, we speak with Dr Joshua Pate, a pain scientist, physiotherapist and academic at UTS. Joshua answers your curious questions about why people experience pain differently, how biological, psychological and social factors influence pain, and what health professionals can do to help. Joshua's research explores how the same injury can produce very different experiences for different individuals, and the long-term strategies that support recovery and wellbeing. His work has received a global audience through his TED-Ed video 'The Mysterious Science of Pain' and he was an external reviewer on the WHO Guideline for Chronic Pain in Children. He is passionate about practical interventions, rigorous testing of new approaches in hospitals and schools, and empowering people to take charge of their own healing journeys. Joshua emphasises the importance of empathy, communication and participation in meaningful activities as key parts of effective pain management. Joshua is also the author of the 'Zoe and Zak’s Pain Hacks' series, a collection of 5 books designed to help children understand and talk about pain. These books have been reviewed and endorsed by clinicians, educational experts and researchers from around the world. Watch Joshua’s TED-Ed video: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-myster...
