When Cysts Turn Tumorous: Two Cases of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor and a Literature Review Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are unusual growths that develop in the jawbone. They were once considered simple jaw cysts but are now recognized as tumors because they can grow aggressively and come back after treatment. These tumors are most commonly found in the lower jaw (mandible) and can grow quite large. While they usually occur as a single growth, multiple OKCs can appear in people with a rare genetic condition called nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). Because of their aggressive nature, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reclassified OKCs as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs), meaning doctors now take a more serious approach to treating them. This study describes two cases of KCOTs: 1. A 45-year-old woman with a tumor in the upper right jaw. 2. A 27-year-old man with a tumor in the lower right jaw. Both patients underwent surgical removal of the tumor. The study also examines how these tumors appear on scans and under a microscope to help improve diagnosis and treatment.
