In this week’s landscape photography episode, I set out to photograph away from the sunrise, anticipating the weather report’s prediction of low and medium cloud that would likely smother any hint of colour. The focus of this landscape photography session was all about experimenting with different shutter speeds, largely without the use of filters. Pre-dawn, however, things didn’t exactly go to plan—I managed to drain two batteries, lose my phone, and misplace a crucial lead needed to record the shoot through my camera. Once I got myself sorted, I lined up my first shot, embracing the moody pre-dawn atmosphere. Long exposures before sunrise have produced some of my favourite images over the years, so I started with a four-minute exposure, then followed up with a mix of two-minute and 60-second shots as the light gradually lifted. The subject for the morning was the iconic remains of a jetty at Port Willunga, South Australia, and as the waves rolled in and out, I encouraged my audience to compare the dramatic differences between incoming and outgoing water movement—showcasing two images side by side and inviting viewers to choose their favourite. For my final series of shots, I decided to introduce a six-stop ND filter to further extend my shutter speeds, aiming for some smooth, ethereal long exposures. Just as I settled into this rhythm, a touch of unexpected colour began to emerge—completely defying the forecast. Dropping back to shorter exposures, I captured some of the most dynamic and dramatic images of the year, making the most of the fleeting burst of colour before it faded. It was a perfect reminder that no matter how much we plan, nature always has the final say, and being adaptable is key to capturing those truly special moments in landscape photography. I specialise in large format print focusing on creating fine art images best viewed on a wall. Do you need audio for your multimedia projects?
