Sudan, which suffered great losses in territory, identity and economy with the secession of South Sudan in 2011, is now on the verge of a second division. This time, not through a referendum, but under the shadow of weapons. In the civil war that broke out in 2023, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control in the west and around the capital, while the Sudanese army took control in the east and north. The first year of the war was spent with the RSF’s rapid advance; they captured many critical points, including the capital Khartoum. However, the balance changed at the end of 2024. The army gained the upper hand in strategic cities such as the Presidential Palace in Khartoum, Al-Jazira, Sennar and Al-Ubeid. The army reorganized its military structure, recruited new soldiers and put into service special units suitable for urban warfare. As the chain of command strengthened, coordination on the fronts increased. The RSF, on the other hand, paid a heavy price for spreading over large areas. It suffered losses especially on the eastern and central fronts, and its commanders were killed or changed sides. The transfer of Abu Aqila Kikel from Al-Jazeera to the army dealt a blow to the HDK’s dominance in the center. Today, the HDK is active in most of Darfur and is trying to establish its own government there. Al-Fashir’s fate will determine the fate of the country. While the army is determined to retake the entire country, the HDK is on its way to establishing its own administration in the west and effectively dividing Sudan in two. The upcoming conflicts will determine Sudan’s future.
