Emmélin | Backlight Sessions 034 | London Emmélin is the musical project of Danish singer and vocalist Emma Sand, who weaves beautiful, delicate, dark, versatile songs, nestled somewhere in between the genres of jazz, classical, pop, and spoken word. They're pieces that are equally at home performed alongside a chamber orchestra – in the grandiose setting of a church or concert hall – or (as is the case here) stripped back, solo, in the more introspective atmosphere of the Backlight Sessions studio. The lyrics of Emmélin's pieces are certainly as important as any note pressed on her accompanying piano (so much so, that debut EP ‘I Flee But I Long’ was released alongside a printed book of lyrics) and this solo, stripped-back performance rewardingly brings them to the fore, where they seem even more personal, vulnerable, reflective and profound. For her Backlight Session, Emmélin performs three quarters of her aforementioned debut EP, released on Goldsmiths University imprint NX Records in July: ‘I Love You Right I Loved You Left’ opens as an contemplative examination of personal nature and behaviour during a concluded relationship. ‘Old Roots’ is a dynamic shift through the gears, gently crescendoing as it cycles through seasons and moods, and slowly and delicately amping power, drama and disillusionment. 'I Really Have Changed’, an almost impressionist-reminiscent arrangement, perfectly closes the set – creeping elegantly towards a final, tone-shifting, concluding chord.
