1978: The Car Has Pickup, But the Complete Failure of the Electrical System Was a Disappointment WTVJ's Bob Mayer gets "Behind the Wheel" of Ford's new 1979 Mustang -- the Ghia version, list price $7,184 -- and finds that while the car's performance is solid, its chassis (or something) is loose, with "more rattles, squeaks and groans, at least in this particukar car, than in any new car I've driven." "No telling," Mayer says, "how many things were not tightened properly when the car was made." Nobody who drove a late-1970s American car or saw thow quickly more reliable imports took over the market will be surprised to learn that Mayer's test Mustang had other troubles as well: spotty interior finish, grainy paint, and an electrical system prone to...Shutting down completely, especially when it rained. But on the bright side, there was the new Mustang's "rakish" styling, inspired by the current Mercedes coupe, a "fancy" digital clock and lots of warning lights in the dash to alert the car's driver to problems. Given the problems Mayer found with his test car, those warning lights got a real workout.
