Over 65 years ago, Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite, blasted into low Earth orbit. Remarkably, that 184lbs, spherical satellite birthed an industry and sparked a race that led to humans landing on the Moon, countless scientific discoveries, and the acceleration of satellite technology. This 1-minute time-lapse illustrates the growth of space traffic in LEO since 1957, using LeoLabs catalog data and open-source information. The objects shown include operational satellites, rocket bodies, and space debris. As of August 2023, there are over 20,000 cataloged objects in LEO. We estimate that number will continue to grow significantly in the near future. That means space traffic coordination will be critical for the continued success of not only missions in space but our lives right here on Earth.
