Preventing Cervical Cancer in Pakistan: A Turning Point for Women's Health

In Pakistan, cervical cancer ranks as the second most common cancer among women of reproductive age. About 5,000 new cases and more than 3,000 deaths from the disease are reported each year, though the actual burden is likely to be higher. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set out a global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030, and around 150 countries worldwide, including many low- and middle-income countries, have already made progress through national vaccination programmes against the human papillomavirus (HPV) which is the underlying cause of the vast majority of cases of cervical cancer.
