History of the Partnach Gorge / Partnachklamm in GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Bavaria, Germany

In the Alpine mountains of the Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm in German) – a 2,303 ft natural monument filled with waterfalls, rapids, caves and beautiful water basins. The sedimentary rock strata of the gorge (called Muschelkalk in German) was formed 240 million years ago. Traces of marine life can still be seen on the strata. Back in the 1700s, local Germans used the gorge to transport firewood to nearby towns on a raft. Today, however, the gorge is more of a tourist attraction. There is a small entrance fee to get into the gorge in the summer months (around 4 Euros), but if you go early enough they may not be charging yet! Warning: it gets VERY crowded these days. I went to the gorge at 7 am to beat the crowds. It’s much more enjoyable to be in the Partnachklamm alone!
