(24 Jun 1995) Mandarin/Russian/Nat Chinese premier Li Peng has agreed to grant Ukraine just over 1 million dollars in financial aid, and to give humanitarian aid to the people of Chernobyl. Li Peng and his huge entourage of around 100 high-ranking officials arrived in Kiev, Friday, for a two-day visit which is being seen as a move to shore up economic ties between the two countries. In the ornate surroundings of Kiev's Maritisky Palace, the Chinese and Ukraine prime ministers put their signatures to three agreements. This was Li Peng's first visit to the republic and it comes just a month after U-S President Clinton came here. For both superpowers Ukraine is strategically important - especially given its size, population and proximity to Russia. With Washington already pouring millions of dollars into the fledgling market economy, Beijing decided to follow suit because of its strong trade links with the country. SOUNDBITE: (in Russian) "For Ukraine the Chinese People's Republic is the third largest exporter of goods after Russia and Turkmenia." SUPER CAPTION: Yevgeny Marchuk, Ukraine Prime Minister The two countries also signed a communique on their discussions and an agreement on ecological and environmental cooperation.
