Just like Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, James Garner caught the racing bug after filming a racing movie, in this case the legendary 1966 film Grand Prix. Garner, likely influenced by his agent or his insurance company, chose to own and operate a race team instead. In 1968 American International Racing was born (the very cool sounding All American Racers was already taken), running a brief schedule of American endurance events with two Chevrolet L88 Corvettes. Starting from scratch, the learning curve was steep. AIR saw no success in 1968. Undeterred, Garner returned in 1969 with not only 2 Lola T70 Mk. 3's for the Daytona 24 hour and Sebring 12 hour events, but a TS5 for the new Formula 5000 series (called Formula A at the time). Garner split his time between making movies, talk show appearances, commercials, and occasionally visiting the team garage, while a documentary crew followed him around. A 2nd place at Daytona behind the Penske Lola gave the team a huge confidence boost, but this was as close to winning as the team would ever get. Disaster struck at Mont Tremblant later that year, as their F5000 car was totaled in a massive lap 1 pileup. The 1969 documentary ends with Garner admitting that owning a race team was a sunk cost, but he'd continue anyway. For 1970 the team was trimmed to just a Formula 5000 effort, with a 2nd place at Riverside and a 3rd at Sears Point being the only highlights. https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/bri... https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/sou... https://thracing.de/wsc-legends-60s-p...
