The FH Foundation was honored to award Nobel Laureates Michael S. Brown, MD & Joseph L. Goldstein, MD as the 2016 Pioneer Awardees at the FH Global Summit in Dallas, Texas Unique in the world of science, their partnership and friendship has lasted more than 40 years. Drs. Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein are the recipients of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their extraordinary research on fibroblasts from individuals affected with familial hypercholesterolemia. They discerned that the mutation in an unknown gene had removed a normal feedback mechanism that inhibited the HMG Co-A reductase resulting in extremely high activity of the enzyme. Further research led to the discovery of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R). Drs. Brown and Goldstein revealed that the mutated gene coded for the LDL-R, completely or partially reducing the cellular uptake of LDL-cholesterol. Drs. Brown and Goldstein have also received the U.S. National Medal of Science and the Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research among other prestigious awards. They are admired for their willingness to educate the next generation of scientists. The Brown/Goldstein Lab continues to be a vital contributor to cutting-edge research and an inspiration beyond the field of FH.. “It is hoped that these insights will lead to a deeper understanding of the biology of cells and thereby to more effective forms of treatment for diseases such as familial hypercholesterolemia.” – Micheal S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein
