Draw the Northern Muriqui – or woolly spider – monkey. Children across Brazil, where the Northern Muriqui monkey lives – will be drawing it too. Everyone who sends in a picture can see them displayed online as part of the withNature2020 project on 22 May – the international day for biodiversity, when we’re going to create a tapestry of species across the world. The idea of this film is to encourage you to contribute to withNature2020, a collaborative art project which is going to generate giant images of endangered species at different locations across the world on 22 May. Why is it doing that? Well, the project wants to get people thinking and talking about biodiversity because at the moment we are losing species far too fast, at 100 to 1000 times the rate at which we have naturally lost them. It’s happening for a variety of reasons, but this monkey exemplifies one of the principal ones – and that is habitat destruction. With an increasing number of humans on the planet, there’s more demand for land – for people to live on and also for agriculture. Where the Northern Muriqui lives, more than 85% of the Atlantic Forest has been cut down already. Luckily for this monkey, there is a fragment of remaining forest which is protected from logging, because of the foresight of a coffee farmer who realized that the forest was important for his crop in terms of assuring water supply and decided to preserve it. Within that protected area, the population of monkeys has increased from 50 to 350, a seven fold increase, more than trebled since the early 1980s, showing that populations can begin to recover when they are given the chance. But the battle isn’t over yet, the Northern Muriqui is still considered to be critically endangered, so in Belo Horizonte – a city near to the remaining pockets of forest where the monkey still lives –they want to create a giant image of the monkey for withNature2020. They had hoped to do this in reality, but the city was recently locked down so the image will be digital. By sending your drawing to [email protected] , you can help them and be part of the bigger picture. Every picture becomes a pixel in the giant image and each one counts, so thank you for your support. We're going to draw the Northern Muriqui Monkey as part of a special art project that is trying to remind the world of the value of all the plants and animals that make up the biodiversity of this planet, and why we should try and protect this species.
