The envelope containing those photographs had their mother's handwriting on it that said "Erik's 6th birthday". THROAT INJURY At the age of seven, Erik Menendez was taken to the emergency room with an unexplained throat injury affecting the posterior pharynx, uvula, and soft palate, which suggested oral rape. Today, dentists receive training to identify this type of injury in children to help detect and report instances of child sexual abuse. MEDICAL RECORDS Both sets of medical records listed symptoms that are usually present in cases of child sexual abuse, including: gastrointestinal problems, unexplained abdominal pain, enuresis, frequent headaches, speech articulation disorder, telogen effluvium and teeth grinding. UNSUTURED SCAR Erik Menendez had a scar on his left thigh consistent with a knife wound. He testified that he obtained the scar when a kitchen knife was used to cut his thighs and make him bleed during 'rough sex.' COUSIN DIANE When Lyle was 8 years old, he told his cousin Diane Vandermolen that he and his dad had been "touching each other down there." COUSIN ANDY Cousin Andy Cano testified that when he was 10 and Erik was 12, Erik confided in him that his dad was "massaging his dick" and wanted to know if this was normal. Andy was 15 when the brothers were taken into custody. He tragically passed away in 2003 at 30 due to an overdose of sleeping pills. His mother told reporters that she believes her son's feelings of guilt and inability to handle his cousins' incarceration led to his death. UNEARTHED LETTER After Andy passed away, his mother (Jose's sister) found a letter in his belongings that 17 year old Erik had written to him some months before killing his parents. The letter details Erik's struggle with ongoing sexual abuse. NOISES Many relatives testified that nobody was allowed to go "down the hall" when Jose was in the bedroom with one of the boys. Cousin Alan Andersen mentioned he heard noises from the bedroom, and he added that Kitty would turn the TV up loud and stop him from going upstairs to see what was happening. PIXOTE Neighbour Alicia Hercz testified she attended a dinner at the Menendez home where Jose screened the film Pixote, in front of her and his young sons. At the beginning of the movie a child is raped. Hercz said Jose found it "hysterically funny." THERAPY NOTES Six weeks before her death, Kitty Menendez told her therapist that she was hiding "sick and embarrassing secrets" regarding her family. AUDIOTAPES Four months before the killings, Lyle Menendez confided in his friend Donovan Goodreau about the sexual abuse he and his brother had suffered. During his testimony as a prosecution witness, Donovan initially denied these claims. He was later confronted with audio recordings in which he acknowledged this before the trial. SCHOOL ESSAY At the age of 14, Lyle Menendez wrote a school essay titled "I will change your verdict", about a man about a man soon to be executed for killing a child molester to protect a 12-year-old boy. The essay was written shortly after Lyle discovered his father had been abusing his 12-year-old brother, Erik. MENUDO Jose Menendez oversaw the boy band Menudo while at RCA Records. Members were not selected only for their talent; once a boy reached puberty or turned 16, he was replaced by younger talent.
