Phan Nhật Nam Oral History

Phan Nhat Nam talks about his experiences as a political prisoner when the communists took over Vietnam. He came to the United States and lived in Houston, Washington D.C., and Minnesota before coming to California's Garden Grove area. -- Phan Nhật Nam is a former soldier of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) whose life has been intricately woven with the turbulent history of the Vietnam War. Enlisting on November 11, 1960, under the command of Colonel Nguyễn Chánh Thi during a coup attempt against President Ngô Đình Diệm, he later graduated from a military school in Đà Lạt in 1963. Despite obstacles early on—stemming in part from his father’s past as a Communist official—Nam served with distinction in several paratrooper combat units, including the 7th, 9th, and 2nd platoons of the 2nd Paratrooper Battalion. Over the years, he not only witnessed, but also actively participated in critical battles such as those at Sạc Ly, Ấp Bắc, Bình Giã, and Khe Sanh. After decades in combat, Phan Nhật Nam turned to writing and journalism, contributing to publications like Sóng Thần and Đại Dân Tộc, and earning literary awards for his reporting, notably for the article “The One Who Remained at Sạc Ly.” His career as a journalist is marked by a sincere commitment to documenting the harsh realities of war—a burden he carries as both a witness and a survivor. Nam’s life took another dramatic turn when he was imprisoned for a total of 14 years during the post-war years, enduring long periods of detention before eventually returning to civilian life. In 1993, he emigrated to the United States, and after living in several states, he has resided in California since 2005, where he works for SBTN and SET television systems. Through his military service, writing, and personal experiences, Phan Nhật Nam offers a poignant, firsthand account of the Vietnam War and its lasting impact on his life and on his nation.
