・About The Composition・ The Rapsodia notturna (Nocturnal Rhapsody) is an essay in the amalgamation of the sonic identities of the guitar and the piano - two instruments that are not often heard together. This is done partly through the frequent exploitation of the percussive possibilities of the piano, and partly by treating the guitar as a melodic instrument in contrapuntal interaction with the piano. The work, which consists of several linked sections, is based on three thematic ideas which return in various guises. All three are announced by the guitar. A and B are both heard at the outset, against sustained piano chords, and are developed before C appears on the unaccompanied guitar, with interjections from the piano. A dance-like variant of C generates motifs which are then combined with the original C. An abbreviated recapitulation of A and B (with the instrumental roles reversed) leads to an extensive fugue on a subject derived from these two themes. At the climax of the fugue, this subject is combined with C. This is followed by a final dance section based on C, employing a rhythmic pattern often found in central African music. Shortly before the end brief reference is made to the two opening ideas. ・About The Composer・ Hendrik Hofmeyr was born in Cape Town in 1957. His first major success as a composer came in 1988 with the performance at the State Theatre of The Fall of the House of Usher, which won the South African Opera Competition and was also awarded the Nederburg Opera Prize. In the same year, Hofmeyr, who was furthering his studies in Italy during ten years of self-imposed exile as a conscientious objector, obtained first prize in an international competition with music for a short film by Wim Wenders. In 1992 he accepted a post as lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch, and in 1997 won two further international competitions, the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium (with Raptus for violin and orchestra) and the Dimitri Mitropoulos Competition in Athens (with Byzantium for high voice and orchestra). His Incantesimo for flute was chosen to represent South Africa at the Congress of the International Society of Contemporary Music in Croatia in 2005. In 2008 he was honoured with a Kanna Award by the Kleinkaroo National Arts Festival. Hofmeyr, whose oeuvre includes some 90 commissioned works, is currently professor and Head of Composition and Music Theory at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained his Doctorate in 1999. ・Notes・ Title: Rapsodia Notturna Composer: Hendrik Hofmeyr Commissioned by Louise Smit for Corneli Smit and Goran Krivokapic Guitar: Goran Krivokapic Piano: Corneli Smit Score Video by Liam Pitcher Uploaded with express permission from Hendrik Hofmeyr ・Website・ Visit my Website to discover more of my music, as well as the music of other living composers and musicians.
