The full video is on my YouTube channel #Zenthanol. The concept is simple: plant "resistance" is the capability of a plant to resist the effects of a stressor to some degree. It is not immunity, which is generally defined as an incompatibility of the host and the pest. In both cases, these statuses are conferred by a complex network of interactions from discrete to overt, and are different between individuals. In the case of pathogenic fungi like #PowderyMildew: "Every spore is a roll of mutational dice" Millions of spores, magnitudes as many mutations, most affecting the pest's ability to disrupt the plant. Now, plants evolve too, but their abilities will be variable and might not be adequate for something too different from the average. They also don't reproduce as much as their fungal parasite. Resistance has to be tested with controlled exposures that are measured in order to produce something robust enough to work across many powdery mildew populations of a pest species. Since resistance is to an established pest is often contextual, it isn't useful if it is too narrow. Historically this can cause huge crop loss with predictable results for the cultivators. Canna has relied on plant-attuned folks for its care and progressive enrichment; with the advent of pest movement via global trade, it has given these parasites a strong edge by touring various sites and adapting sometimes faster than their hosts and us growers can compensate. Resistance also can be "broken" by new strains, this happens a lot, and is rarely considered even if this is well documented in other plants. As a community, we must verify resistance claims with genetic, mechanistic AND field tested proof and keep ourselves accountable to prevent narrow or undefined resistance from causing confusion and strife. Just ask the millions of dead American Chestnuts what a few Chinese Chestnuts with unique fungal blight could do given the chance.
