In a striking interview with Reuters, Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi once again insisted that opposition leader Bobi Wine was neither in danger nor being pursued by state authorities—even after the dramatic military raid on his home that forced him into hiding shortly after the presidential election. According to the minister, Bobi Wine had committed no crime and therefore had nothing to fear. Yet these assurances ring hollow for many observers. The heavy military deployment that surrounded Bobi Wine’s residence, culminating in a violent break-in and the assaulting of his wife, paints a far more alarming picture. If, as the minister claims, no crime was committed, critics are asking what justified the forceful raid and sustained security presence in the first place. The controversy deepened further in light of earlier remarks by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who publicly warned that security forces were “hunting” for Bobi Wine. The contradiction between official denials and such inflammatory statements has only intensified public suspicion and outrage. Meanwhile, Bobi Wine once again broke his silence on Facebook with a defiant declaration: “We have work cut out for us. We refuse to give up or give in. UGANDA WILL BE FREE.” His message, brief but resolute. Here is my commentary.
