An amazing weekend at the Strathpuffer 24 hour mountainbike endurance event. Such a well run, friendly event. We are raising money for Rideforcharlie and also raising the importance of heart screening for young athletes. (Please register to encourage heart screenings in your area). https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfundi... It was our first attempt at a 24 hour event, and to start with one of the hardest, darkest and toughest events was close to madness. I thought we were just going to take part and see how we went but from the off it became clear that Rupert was there to compete so Ben and I had to up our game very quickly to keep up! #determination of teenagers! So proud and super chuffed to say that they finished in 8th place in the Men's pairs. Rupert and Ben had trained well in the recent snowy conditions. They were is good spirts for the full 24 hours, riding, eating, drinking and sleeping well in the extreme temperatures ( -9 C) and snow. Just doing what they love, again and again and again. Rupert had a short period of tiredness when he had to fight his body clock around 2am but a few spoonfuls on honey gave him a boost and he soon picked up. Ben was powered by cups of tea throughout. Between them they drank 11 litres of liquid in various forms, and ate cheese on toast, 6 packets of crisps, leek and potato soup, chicken stew, boiled potatoes, cheese and biscuits, malt loaf, pop corn, bowls of shreddies, enchiladas/chilli, spinach and potato soup, sausage rolls, banana milk shakes, honey, home made nut balls and choc truffles, rice parcels, scones with clotted cream. Pit crew duties were eventful, feeding, continuously boiling kettle, defrosting frozen water bottles, changing tyres to ice spikers, and scraping 1/2cm of caked ice off bikes each lap to keep them moving. Luckily they avoided any mechanical issues. Camper coped reasonably well in cold. Thank goodness for snow chains. We blew up the inverter charging lights (oops) and the drains all froze so waste water from washing had to be carried out of van but otherwise all good. So greatful for the camper when the ensite portaloos froze (yuck). (Massive thanks to #strathpuffer team for the regular unblocking!-what a job!) It was a privilege to be in such an awesome inspiring place. It was cold but we had good kit so were able to enjoy the stunningly beautiful scenery with crisp, cold air sparkling around us. Sunrise was pretty spectacular too. Thanks to everyone who has supported us to enable us to do these crazy things. Cheri Mills Coaching Kathy Nadin and the support team of Grandparents. Thanks to @CIOVITA @We Cycle @Joe Thorburn @Matt Perrins for kit and @exposurelights for light hire and conversation through the night as I brought lights in to charge!
