I'm renovating an abandoned ruin into a dream cottage!

🌱 Since spring 2024, I’ve been renovating an old ruin in nature, with the goal of transforming it into a cozy cottage. It’s a full renovation project, done entirely by hand and with a lot of heart. 🍂 At the end of the year, I began a major phase: building a traditional timber frame, with the amazing help of a friend who’s a carpenter — huge thanks to him! We assembled the whole structure: king posts, purlins, ridge beam, rafters… everything was crafted and fitted with care. I even sawed chestnut tree trunks to make an exposed beam and custom rafters for the front of the dormer. The frame design follows the exact layout of the original one (check out the previous episode to see it). 💪 Next came the masonry work on the gable walls, using concrete, lime, and stone — and all the materials had to be hauled up manually to the top of the walls, which was quite a challenge! 🤜 Then I installed the roof boards (volige) across the entire frame and added a weatherproof membrane to keep the house dry and protected from the rain. 👉 Subscribe to follow the next steps of this wild and rewarding journey! 🌱 Depuis le printemps 2024, je rénove une ruine dans la nature pour en faire un véritable cottage. C’est un projet de longue haleine, que je réalise de A à Z avec passion. 🍂 En fin d’année, j’ai attaqué une étape majeure : la construction de la charpente traditionnelle, avec l’aide précieuse d’un ami charpentier — un grand merci à lui ! Arbalétriers, pannes, panne faîtière, chevrons… tout a été façonné et assemblé dans les règles de l’art. J’ai même scié des troncs de châtaignier pour créer une poutre apparente et des chevrons sur mesure pour le fronton du chien-assis. La structure reprend exactement les lignes de l’ancienne charpente (que vous pouvez revoir dans un épisode précédent). 💪 Ensuite, place à la maçonnerie des pignons : béton, chaux et pierres, le tout hissé à la main jusqu’au sommet des murs — un vrai défi ! 🤜 Après ça, j’ai posé la volige sur toute la surface de la charpente, puis mis en place un pare-pluie pour protéger la maison des intempéries et la mettre hors d’eau. 👉 Abonnez-vous pour suivre la suite de cette aventure hors du commun !
