Episode 5 After teaching the stop operant under saddle in the last video, Erica shows how to teach the horse the other operants of shoulder displacement—using direct and indirect rein aids, and the yielding of the hind quarters under saddle. She also shows the correct use of the seat while making turns to help the horse respond to a very light pressure. Erica emphasizes that if riders start by teaching the operants first on the ground and later very methodically under saddle, it will help the horse form good habits and posture. The result of this training with operant conditioning will be a horse that is very easy to stop, send forward, turn, and yield. The horse will become very enjoyable to ride no matter whether it is just a simple trail ride, or high levels of show jumping, eventing, or dressage. Erica Poseley is a rider biomechanics coach who specializes in lunging riders to improve their seats. She is also a Certified Ride With Your Mind coach. She was recently the first person in the United States to have earned a Diploma of Equitation Science from Dr. Andrew Mclean’s International course on equine learning theory.
