(15 Aug 2019) Protesters gathered in London on Thursday to demonstrate against India's move to strip the disputed Kashmir region of its statehood and special constitutional provisions. Demonstrators congregated outside the Indian High Commission, where through chants they accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being a "terrorist" and a "butcher", and later in Trafalgar Square in the UK capital. A lockdown in Indian-administered Kashmir has been in place since August 4, just before a presidential order to subsume the Muslim-majority region into India's federal government by revoking Article 370 of the constitution and downgrading the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two federal territories. A new law allows anyone to buy land there, which some Kashmiris fear could change the region's culture and demographics. Indian foreign ministry officials have said Kashmir is returning to normalcy, but The Associated Press and other news organisations operating in the region describe severe constraints, including the suspension of internet, cellphone and landline services and steel and barbed-wire street blockades.
