I Lived on the Ice in -24: Crappie Catch and Cook and Beaver Trapping

This was the coldest stretch I’ve ever lived on the ice. For 9 or 10 days the nighttime temperatures ranged from -9° to -24°, and I set up camp right on the frozen lake to begin a stretch of beaver trapping and fishing. We started putting in beaver sets, moved through flowages, and began the work that would carry through the rest of this trip. But before long, the fishing picked up. We caught a pile of crappie and brought them back to the tent for a full catch and cook — fish tacos on the ice. Hands down, the best meal I’ve ever eaten while winter ice camping. Living on frozen water in those temperatures changes everything — from how you move, to how you cook, to how you think. This is the beginning of the coldest stretch I’ve ever done out here.
