In the early 1970s, Japanese motorcycle makers were locked in fierce competition, pushing engineering to new limits. One bike changed everything and left Honda and Yamaha scrambling to catch up. The Kawasaki Z1 900 arrived in 1972 and instantly redefined what a production motorcycle could be. This was not just another bike. This was a game changer. The story starts in the late 1960s when Kawasaki decided to enter the four stroke market. Up until then, they were mostly known for their two stroke bikes. The company launched a secret project with the code name New York Steak, aimed squarely at American riders who wanted power and performance. The original plan was to build a 750cc inline four cylinder engine that could compete with anything on the market.
