Battletech: The Union class DropShip (The Mechwarrior Dropship Guide) The Union class is regarded as the yardstick against which all other DropShips are measured. It is the archetypical DropShip, widely used in military and civilian roles. If you see someone mentioning a DropShip without adding a class, it is a safe bet that a Union class is meant. Well-armed and armored, this spheroid craft can deliver a force of BattleMechs together with their MechWarriors, technical support crews, and aerospace support into the hottest landing zone. Capable of carrying twelve 'Mechs and two aerospace fighters (a standard 'Mech company included one air lance under classic SLDF doctrine), it is small enough for use in raids, but powerful enough to be taken seriously in larger-scale operations. The small but numerous, and also more cost-efficient and easier to manufacture, Union class weathered Lostech throughout the Succession Wars era far better than almost all other vessels, and has been in continuous production ever since its inception. The middle section of the DropShip consists of two 'Mech bays. The lower ‘Mech bay is cavernous, with walls lined with four ‘Mech cubicles, doors leading into the two Aero-Space Fighter bays, entrances to the four drop chutes, and storage for repair parts and ammunition. The drop chutes, located below the two ’Mech bays, can deploy a lance of ’Mechs while the craft is in space or atmosphere. The Union, while not as heavily armed as Assault DropShips, carries a formidable array of weapons. The semiautomated weaponry is significant enough to defend the ship from light ground forces and give single and paired aerospace fighters pause. Battletech: The Mechwarrior Dropship Guide should provide basic information about Dropships and their role in the interstellar travel. If you are in a Successor State of the Great Houses, the Clan Occupation Zones or on Holy Terra. From the Inner Sphere to the Periphery and the Clan Homeworlds, every Mechwarrior can use this information to learn about Battletech lore and Battletech history. Drop-ships are the workhorse of interstellar travel. All-important classes will be introduced and their features (aerodyne/ spheroid, Docking Collar, KFFC Boom, Mech Bay, fighter cubicle, …) explained. You will see, that in the BattleTech universe, BattleMechs are not the pinnacle of technology. (This publication was approved by the Precentor Obeedah.) Praise the Word of Blake!
