Light duty means your doctor has placed restrictions on what you can do at work while you recover from an injury. You may be able to perform some tasks, but not all of the duties your regular job requires. For example, after a back injury you might be limited to lifting no more than 20 pounds. If you had rotator cuff surgery, you may be restricted from overhead work. After a knee injury, you might not be able to climb ladders or perform other physical tasks. If your restrictions prevent you from doing your normal job and your employer offers work that fits within those limits, that is considered light duty. Understanding how light duty works is important for protecting both your health and your workers’ compensation benefits.
