Various Koizumi STORYLINE: Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi arrived in Moscow on Thursday for a four-day official visit, which was expected to include talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Relations between Japan and Russia have improved markedly since the fall of the Soviet Union. However, a strong undercurrent of distrust remains - Koizumi is only the third Japanese prime minister to visit Moscow, and the first to do so in five years. Koizumi is a strong advocate of closer ties and has said Russia's transition to a more democratic society and market-oriented economy has opened the way for change. He is expected to meet Putin at the Kremlin on Friday and high on the agenda will be bilateral issues and the simmering crisis over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme. Before leaving Japan, the prime minister said there needed to be a coordinated response to concerns over the nuclear crisis.
