This video features #ambisonic audio tones across 12 azimuth angles to help train your spatial audio perception, but also test how ambisonics sound on different mobile & XR devices. You can move your head around the source to help spatialize the sound or just look forward at the different views provided by Waves NX's Ambisonics Quad/Stereo decoder. I couldn't find any good example videos where I could test my own Ambisonic Audio perception. The closest I found was an audio-only file on Freesound titled "1st-order Ambisonics Clock Test (voice + white noise)." But you still have to use a DAW to properly decode & listen to a binaural rendering, have a motion-tracked solution like a Waves NX head tracker, or use Nuendo's VR integrations to listen to spatial audio on a VR HMD. I was very inspired by Dr. Michael G Wagner's excellent series of free YouTube tutorials. This video wouldn't have been possible without his guidance in producing immersive audio across different DAW platforms. More details on my process below. Consider supporting me on Patreon: / voicesofvr Ultimately, I ended up mixing the ambisonic file with Reaper + the free & open source IEM Plug-in Suite created by staff and students of the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics, which allows you to produce up to 7th order (64-channel) Ambisonics. 1st order was sufficient for me for this video, as YouTube just requires a 4-channel AmbiX ambisonic format. I produced the audio source files in my preferred DAW of Adobe Audition, but it currently doesn't support mixing or rendering out ambisonic audio or if it does, then there are much more robust & well-supported DAW solutions from the music industry. Hopefully others will produce more tests like this to help train your spatial audio perception & improve hardware support for ambisonic audio. What other types of Ambisonic audio tests like this would be helpful to test out equipment or help train spatial audio perception? What are the best sounds, frequency ranges, panning effects to help isolate sounds? What type of spatial visualizations might be possible assuming that more and & more DAWs like Nuendo will have VR monitoring support built in? Hopefully this video provides some design inspiration for more visualizations. IEM has an energy visualizer, but it's a 2D projection & it'd be better to have either an equirectangular output or to have direct OpenXR integrations to monitor some of this directly within VR. I used Adobe Premiere to produce the #360Video, however currently it's a known bug that Premiere isn't allowing the ability to export a 4-channel Ambisonic audio track, which is what all of the videos & tutorials say to do. I was able to find a workaround with ffmpeg with more details here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premie... I had a Waves NX headphones head tracker device I got from one of the employees/Voices of VR fans from GDC 2016, & I finally had a chance to use it now there's a growing ecosystem for ambisonic audio production. This was especially useful in helping to monitor & test whether or not the ambisonics files were working, but also in visualizing the ambisonic output.
