Late summer brings on an abundance of these black gems (scientific name Aronia melanocarpa), who are rich in bioflavonoids / antioxidants, vitamin C, and more. They strengthen our cardiovascular system, immune system, reduce inflammation, and generally support our health. They are one of the highest antioxidant-containing fruits on the planet. Okay, but these fruits are called chokeberry for a reason. They are astringent and will often bring on a gentle cough (but not a choking cough) when eaten fresh. So they are typically cooked and made into juice, jams, jelly syrups, drinks, teas, chutney and hot sauce; or added to soups and stews. They can be dried or frozen for future use. I am excited to make aronia peach hot sauce via lacto-fermentation. You’ll find this health boosting shrub growing in hardiness zones (USDA): 3–8; in full sun to part shade in moist soil (but it’s tolerant of many soil types) in woodland edges, swamps, bogs, moist hedges, and gardens. It is a native perennial shrub of North America belonging to the Rosaceae family. If you don’t have some growing in your neighborhood, perhaps you’d like to plant some! It is very easy to grow. Then the whole neighborhood can benefit from this nutrient dense fruit, offering a great source of vitamin C for those of us living outside the citrus belt. Key Identifying Features: Shrub size: 3–6’ tall by 2–6’ wide: and spreads via suckers Alternate leaf arrangement Leaf shape: elliptic to egg to oblong Leaf margins finely toothed (serrated) Pointy leaf tip Leaf surface smooth Leaf mid vein dotted with black glands (use magnifier) Young bark: smooth, gray-lightish-tan, shiny w/ lenticels New twig bark: reddish brown Older bark: grayer Fruit grows in clusters Fruit is technically a pome (like an apple) Fruit pedicels (fruit stalk) tinged with pink-orange Fruit color when ripe is black Fruit bottom has 5 points like a star; where the sepals were Fruit width: ¼– ½ inch wide Fruit flavor: sour, slightly sweet, astringent, mildly bitter Note the intense pigment of the fruit that will color everything; and tells of its high antioxidant content Wishing you health, black chokeberry style!
