Opus 17; Opus 23; Opus 36 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These pieces by the American pianist and composer Dustin O'Halloran (1971-) were used, in his own performances, in the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola's 2006 biopic 'Marie Antoinette', which starred Kirsten Dunst, and was filmed at Versailles. As Opus 17 appears on O'Halloran's 2004 album, Piano Solos, I am not sure if this and the other pieces were written especially for the film. I have used the published version, but O'Halloran's soundtrack performances sometimes differ in the harmonies of the accompanying figures, and where possible I have used the soundtrack version. I have also taken the liberty of putting in my own cadence at the end of Opus 17, as O'Halloran's is not printed in the published version. The pieces are not - as might be expected - strict pastiches of 18th century music, but do echo 18th and 19th century piano music, using a spare compositional style. On the soundtrack the pieces sound as if they might be played on a period piano, but the 2004 recording of Opus 17 is on a modern piano.
