Beppu, Japan is famous for its geothermal hot springs known as the “Hells of Beppu.” Unlike traditional onsen you can bathe in, these dramatic pools are far too hot and are meant to be admired for their unique colors, bubbling mud, and powerful steam. On our final day in Beppu we set out to explore several of these fascinating hells, including Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell), Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Kamado Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell), Oniishibozu Jigoku, and the infamous Oniyama Jigoku — also known as Crocodile Hell. Along the way we also stopped by the Jigoku Onsen Museum to learn more about the geothermal forces beneath this incredible onsen town. And to end the day… we continued one of our strange travel traditions: trying Mexican food in Asia. 📍 Locations visited: Shiraike Jigoku Umi Jigoku Kamado Jigoku Oniishibozu Jigoku Oniyama Jigoku (Crocodile Hell) Jigoku Onsen Museum Beppu is one of the most unique geothermal destinations in Japan and an unforgettable stop when traveling through Kyushu.
