Texas faces numerous climate-related challenges due to its vast landscapes, large population, and diverse ecosystems. Heavy rainfall and storm surges from hurricanes cause severe flooding, which damages infrastructure and poses health risks from water contamination. Rising temperatures lead to more frequent heat waves, impacting vulnerable populations and straining the power grid due to higher electricity demand. Additionally, the energy sector is vulnerable to extreme weather, which can disrupt energy production and distribution, as evidenced by Winter Storm Uri in 2021. This underscores the need for resilient energy infrastructure. You’ve had a chance to see the impactful work that The People’s Justice Council and its partners are undertaking throughout the Gulf South. We are developing programs aimed at helping communities tackle economic disparities and severe climate challenges and there is still much more work to do. Together, we can cultivate stronger, more resilient communities capable of withstanding and adapting to the challenges brought on by climate change and economic disparities. This comprehensive approach not only safeguards the environment and infrastructure but also empowers communities to thrive and prosper. This is how we will transition from resilience to restoration together.
