The town of Nuneaton lies to the northern end of the English midlands county of Warwickshire. It was originally known as 'Etone' according to the Domesday Book of 1086, meaning 'settlement by water' in reference to the River Anker running through the town. A Benedictine nunnery was established here in the 12th century, thus Etone became Nuneaton. The nunnery was, however, dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and subsequently fell into ruin. Nuneaton obtained a market charter in the 12th century from Henry II, allowing it to develop into a key market town for the surrounding area. The town's main industries over the centuries have included ribbon weaving, coal mining and brick making among others. The town suffered heavy bombing damage during the Blitz in the Second World War. As a consequence, the town centre had to be redesigned in the postwar years. Author George Eliot was born in Nuneaton. Her real name was Mary Ann Evans, though she adopted a male pen name, supposedly to escape the stereotype of female writers being associated with lighthearted romance novels. She wrote a number of significant titles in the Victorian era, including Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner.
