New York Jets (11-6) @ Cleveland Browns (12-4) Saturday, January 3, 1987, 12:30PM Cleveland Municipal Stadium, Cleveland, OH Attendance: 79,650 Weather: mostly cloudy, 36 °F, 54% humidity, wind 12 mph NFL.com currently ranks this game, the 'Marathon by the Lake', as #80 in the Top 100 games of all time. www.nfl.com/100/originals/100-greatest/games-80 The Jets and Browns faced each other 8 times during the 9 seasons from 1978 through 1986. Of these 8 games, 7 were decided by 4 points or less, with 3 going into OT, and this one ending it double-OT, making it the 3rd longest game in NFL history. All 6 double-OT playoff games ever played, with total time played in parentheses, are as follows: 1971-12-25 Miami Dolphins 27 @ Kansas City Chiefs 24 (82:40) 1962-12-23 Dallas Texans 20 @ Houston Oilers 17 (77:54) 1987-01-03 New York Jets 20 @ Cleveland Browns 23 (77:02) 2013-01-13 Baltimore Ravens 38 @ Denver Broncos 35 (76:42) 1977-12-24 Oakland Raiders 37 @ Baltimore Colts 31 (75:43) 2004-01-10 Carolina Panthers 29 @ St. Louis Rams 23 (75:10) The rollercoaster ride that the Jets '86 season provided was like no other. The season took off with a 10-1 start, including a 9-game winning streak, both franchise records to this day. Among the wins were a Week 3 heart-stopping 51-45 OT win vs. Miami in a QB duel for the ages, ranked #91 on the 100 greatest games of all-time on nfl.com, and a nail-biting 14-13 win vs. Buffalo followed just 2 weeks later. The Jets outscored their opponents 303-203 during this 11-game stretch, and through mid-November had NYC football talk buzzing mostly about the Jets, not the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants. Note also that the '86 Mets won their miraculous World Series in the middle of this football season, so NYC sports talk was as fervent as ever. Then, all of a sudden, came an equally historic 0-5 collapse in which the Jets were outscored 183-61. Four defensive lineman/linebackers were lost to injury, exposing the Jets pass defense to be the weakest in the NFL. Furthermore, a sore arm limited Ken O'Brien's downfield passing to star receivers Al Toon, Wesley Walker, and Mickey Shuler, until he was finally benched entering the playoffs. No team in NFL history before or since has made the playoffs while ending the regular season with 5 consecutive losses. Yet somehow, the Jets miraculously rose from the ashes to decisively knock off the overachieving Kansas City Chiefs in the Wildcard round 35-15. Despite entering Cleveland to face the #1 seeded Browns as 7-point underdogs, the Jets carried enough momentum into this game to remain competitive throughout. With 4:22 remaining in the 4th quarter, Freeman McNeil's TD delivered an apparent knockout punch to give the Jets a 20-10 lead, prompting Jets' radio play-by-play announcer Charley Steiner to confidently proclaim '... and the Jets are going to the AFC Championship Game!' However, the rollercoaster ride for this game was just getting started. You can watch for yourself what transpired next (it's still too painful to relive through!). It suffices to say that when it finally ended, the image of Marty Lyons sitting alone, motionless, and exhausted in the middle of the field while staring at the goalpost in disbelief pretty much sums up how many Jets fans felt at that moment.
