Skill-Building & Labor Mobility Webinar Series | [Session 2] Exploring Effective Labor Mobility Models and Pathways Co-hosted by the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative (RSRI) Climate Risks and Self-Reliance Technical Working Group, the RSRI Market Systems Development (MSD) Technical Working Group, Talent Beyond Boundaries, and RefugePoint, this three-part webinar series explores how skill-building and labor mobility initiatives can better work together to support refugee self-reliance while also addressing private sector needs and systemic barriers in host and third countries. Moderated by Lara Dyer, Canada Director for Talent Beyond Boundaries, the second session of the series focused on international labor mobility as a complementary solution for refugees. While often seen as high-potential, these pathways have faced numerous challenges scaling beyond small pilot projects. In addition, concerns persist about the potential long-term impacts in host countries of the loss of highly skilled workers who emigrate to more developed countries. This discussion explored ethical recruitment practices, how to build talent pipelines aligned with real employer demand, and how to ensure that refugees are supported throughout the journey–from preparation to integration. It also considered how these models can benefit host country nationals and their communities. Session 2 speakers included: Steven Harrison | CEO, Tri-County Mennonite Homes Ruto Lyoba | Managing Director, East Africa Institute of Welding Lara White | Head of the Labour Migration Unit, IOM Lebanon Abdulla Daoud | Impact Manager – Refugees, Northpine Foundation
