Each year more than 400 local patients who qualify undergo a heart procedure called CABG, which stands for coronary artery bypass grafting. Dr. Randall Buss, a cardiovascular surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System, says it’s a common procedure that gives positive results. “It’s a coronary bypass surgery where we surgically bypass the blocked artery on the heart.” Patients are typically between 70 and 80 years old with multiple blockages in the arteries. “This procedure is an open procedure. We open the chest through the middle of the sternum through the breast bone. We open the entire chest and we use the vein for the leg and the artery from the back of the chest wall and we bypass all the blocked arteries. In this type of operation we have to get on the front of the heart, on the back of the heart, on the side of the heart, the bottom of the heart, we have to be around the entire heart,” said Dr. Buss. He says this life saving procedure can prolong a patient’s life for many years. But like any procedure there are risk factors. In order to qualify, a patient’s age, weight, and overall health are considered. “If the blockages are critical and the patient is unwilling to have surgery or for some reason doesn’t have surgery they can have a massive heart attack and take their life,” said Dr. Buss. He says patients who have the procedure feel the results. “What’s very interesting is many of these patients once they start exercising more they feel better than they’ve felt in many years.” After surgery patients will typically spend six days in the hospital. After about a month, Dr. Buss says the patient will be able to feel the benefits.
