This isn't a theme park. This is the daily commute in China's 8D Mountain City. We're exploring the insane engineering of the Chongqing Metro, the most extreme public transport system ever built, featuring a train that runs straight through an apartment building, the world's deepest subway station, and bridges that soar through the clouds. Embark on a journey into the heart of Chongqing, the city that defies logic and gravity. Imagine a city so vertically complex it's been nicknamed the "8D City." A place where the 1st floor of one building connects to the 22nd-floor plaza of another. This is Chongqing, a Chinese megacity of over 32 million people draped across a landscape of sharp, unforgiving mountain ranges. In a city where your GPS gives up and maps are useless, how do you move millions of people every single day? This is the story of how human ingenuity conquered an impossible challenge. For decades, the idea of a metro system in Chongqing was a distant dream. The city was suffocating under the weight of its own traffic, with commutes turning into hours-long nightmares. Building a conventional subway seemed impossible. How could you tunnel through solid rock mountains and lay tracks on near-vertical slopes? The project was deemed too expensive, too complex, too audacious. While cities like Beijing and Shanghai developed their networks, Chongqing was left behind, shackled by its own unique geography. The Monorail: A Revolutionary Solution for a Vertical World The breakthrough came when engineers dared to think differently. Instead of a traditional two-rail subway, they chose the monorail. This decision was a stroke of genius for several key reasons: Lighter & Cheaper: A straddle-beam monorail is significantly lighter than conventional tracks. This meant fewer, more slender support columns were needed to build the elevated system, slashing the cost from an estimated $200 million per kilometer to a more manageable $100 million. Agility & Power: Monorails are engineering acrobats. They can handle much sharper turns and climb far steeper gradients—two abilities that were absolutely essential for navigating the twisting, climbing terrain of Chongqing. Efficiency & Quietness: The rubber tires on a monorail are far quieter than steel wheels on steel rails, a huge benefit in a dense urban environment. They are also more energy-efficient, with a monorail station consuming a fraction of the power of a conventional one. Witnessing the Engineering Marvels of the Chongqing Metro The construction itself was a feat of innovation. Engineers designed custom "beam transport machines" that acted like giant mechanical caterpillars, crawling across the support pillars to lay each massive section of track in places where giant cranes couldn't reach. The result is a network filled with world records and mind-bending features: Liziba Station (The Train Through a Building): The most iconic feature of the metro. To solve a land dispute, engineers and architects collaborated to integrate a metro station directly into the 6th, 7th, and 8th floors of a residential apartment building. The tracks rest on independent pillars, so residents experience a noise level no louder than a dishwasher. The World's Highest & Deepest Stations: On the very same metro line, you will find two world records. Hualongqiao Station is the world's highest, with its platform suspended 50 meters (164 ft) above the ground—like waiting for a train on the roof of a 15-story building. Just a few stops away is Hongyancun Station, the world's deepest, plunging over 100 meters (328 ft) beneath the surface. The escalator ride down alone takes 8 minutes! Record-Breaking Bridges: The network relies on some of the most impressive transit bridges ever constructed. The E'gongyan Rail Transit Bridge is the longest metro-only suspension bridge on the planet, while the Caijia Rail Transit Bridge is the highest, carrying trains 100 meters above the river. On foggy days, it feels like you're riding a train straight through the heavens.
