(22 Mar 2000) Natural Sound There have been tearful and angry scenes in Baghdad, as funerals were held for the victims of a recent mortar attack on the Iraqi capital. Four people were reported killed, and 38 more injured in the attack, which the official Iraqi News Agency said was perpetrated by agents operating from neighbouring Iran on Tuesday night. Iraqis crowded the streets of Baghdad on Wednesday, for the funerals of victims of a recent mortar attack. Six mortars hit a residential area in the Iraqi capital, killing four people and wounding 38. The Iraqi government blamed dissident agents from neighbouring rival Iran. A statement carried by the official Iraqi News Agency (I-N-A) on Wednesday said the attack took place on Tuesday night. It accused "agents of the Iranian regime" - a reference to Iran-based Iraqi dissidents - of firing the mortars at an unnamed residential area in the Iraqi capital. It added, without elaborating, that Iraq "reserves its right for a suitable response." There are many Palestinians living in this area, but officially it's been announced that two Iraqis and two foreigners identified only as non-Iraqi Arabs were killed. The condition of some of the 38 injured was serious, according to the statement. I-N-A said later that a senior member of the ruling Baath party, visited the injured in hospital and expressed condolences to the families of the dead, on behalf of President Saddam Hussein. Iraq and Iran fought an eight-year war that ended with a U-N brokered ceasefire in 1988. The two Muslim neighbours never signed a peace treaty and their relations have remained tense in the post-war years. Each harbours dissident groups fighting the other's government.
