JonBenet murder investigation deepens, questions over Karr's confession

(19 Aug 2006) Boulder, Colorado - 18 August 2006 1. Pull back view of Boulder streets 2. Various of man buying newspaper from newspaper stand 3. Close up of newspaper headline reading (English) "E-mails from John Mark Karr" 4. Close up of the published letters 5. Mid shot of women around table 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Reed Glenn, Boulder resident: "I hope that he did do it so that it is solved, but the story is very odd. I mean there are some very strange details that makes one wonder if he is just crazy and admitting to something he didn't really do." Washington, DC - 18 August 2006 7. Mid shot criminologist William Chamblis watching Karr's Thailand news conference 8. Various shots of Chamblis reading reports of emails exchanged between University Professor Tracey and Karr 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) William Chambliss, Criminologist, George Washington University: "It tells us that he was prepared for this. It tell us that he expected it in some way - now that may have been only for the last twenty four hours, but it tells us that he had at least thought about what this process might look like and was prepared to act in a certain way toward it. He was prepared to say no comment to a lot of questions, that takes some thinking. If you are really caught and you are nervous you are not so likely to be prepared to say that. He seemed very calm, very matter of fact. He seemed almost confident that he hadn't done anything wrong, which is an interesting twist on it which fits in with him saying I was there and it was an accident - but it was as if he was not the one that caused the accident." Pasadena, California - 18 August 2006 10. Mid shot of author Carlton Smith walking along street 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Carlton Smith, crime author: "It is not unusual in a high profile case like this with lots of publicity for people to insert themselves in ... to take the case on in a very personal way. Occasionally you do have people make false confessions and that is something that the police need to be aware of and they need to take the tack of saying to the confessor, 'prove it to me' that you did this." 12. Mid and close-up of Smith's book Washington, DC - 18 August 2006 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Stolorow, Executive Director of Forensic Sciences for Orchid Cellmark: "Any circumstance in which the test results we produced in 1997 that are going to be compared against a new profile from the suspect, in this case John Karr will either match or not match. If they don't match the issue is probably irrelevant. If they do match then there is going to have to be some further explanation to answer questions that arose in the collection process and beyond that I can't go. That information has not been made public yet." Boulder, Colorado - 18 August 2006 14. Close-up of newspaper front page saying "Truth or Fiction?" STORYLINE: Murder suspect John Mark Karr was awaiting extradition to the United States on Friday, where questions mounted over whether his stunning confession related to the killing of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was that of a killer or merely someone obsessed with the case. Hours after John Mark Karr told reporters in Thailand he was with JonBenet when she died, questions arose about his claims - including whether he sexually assaulted the young American beauty queen or was even in Colorado at the time of the killing. Local newspapers covered the story extensively and residents of Boulder, Colorado - the scene of the crime - struggled with the news 24 hours after Karr's arrest. Proving Karr's guilt or innocence rests heavily on the DNA evidence.
