Is this 1964 Chevelle SS Convertible Rare? Let’s find out. 1964 was the introduction of the Chevelle and it was built as a two door, four door, convertible, station wagon and pickup truck. It was a very popular vehicle with a total of 370,834 Chevelle’s of all body styles being built in its first year of production. 1964 Chevelle’s where built at five General Motors production facilities across the United States. Atlanta Georgia, Baltimore Maryland, Fremont California, Kansas City Kansas and Van Nuys California. This particular 1964 Chevelle SS convertible was built in Baltimore Maryland, in the third week of September, 1963. Back then Chevrolet’s yearly production runs went from September through July with the assembly line being shut down for retool for the next model year through August. No cars were built in August. This particular Chevelle was built in the third week of September, 1963 as designated on its cowl tag 09C. This car was built between September 16the through September 20th, making it one of the earliest Chevelle’s built. In the first month of production a total of 3,560 Chevelle’s were built at the Baltimore plant of all body styles, this car being number 1,267, making this a very early production car. Baltimore built a total of 87,043 Chevelle’s of all body styles for the 1964 model year. Interestingly, in 1964 the Baltimore assembly plant also built Buicks, Oldsmobile's and Pontiacs along with Chevrolets one after another on the same passenger car line. In 1964 a total of 23,158 convertibles were built with 9,640 of them being Chevelle SS cars built between all five assembly plants. Of the 23,158 convertibles, 9,843 of them came with a manual top of which this car is one. It is not known how many convertibles came out of the Baltimore assembly plant or how the convertibles were dispersed around all five factories. But with all this information it’s not hard to imagine that factories in areas with sunshine, like the two California plants along with Atlanta and Kansas that they would have built the lion’s share of the convertibles for their prospective regions where as Baltimore would have built less due to the harsh winters of the north east region. Taking all this into consideration, this particular Chevelle, being produced in the first year of model production, the first month of production, the third week of the first month, being a convertible, being an SS and being built in Baltimore makes it a very rare car in deed. This particular car originally came off the assembly line with a 283 engine, a powerglide transmission, painted ember red, with a black vinyl interior, bucket seats, center console with automatic floor shifter and a black convertible top. The Baltimore assembly plant cowl tag did not list any of the factory options unlike the other factories which did list the options the car came with. So, without the original build sheet, it is impossible to know what options came on this car. In the next video, we will get into what this car is now, what condition it’s in and what’s left of the original car that came off the assembly line.
