Eagle Peak, Yosemite — May 2025 Trip Report In May 2025, I set out on a one-night backpacking trip with Brandon in Yosemite National Park. The day started with a bit of luck — we went to the Wilderness Permit Center and were able to swap our original permit from the Oak Flat Trailhead to the Yosemite Falls Trailhead. That change effectively cut our hiking distance in half and gave us significantly more time to relax and explore at the top. We hiked up the Yosemite Falls Trail and camped on Eagle Peak — which offers arguably the best panoramic view in Yosemite, with sweeping vistas of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, and the entire valley floor far below. The hike was incredible — and grueling. We gained roughly 4,600 feet of elevation over a 12-mile round trip. Fortunately, the weather was phenomenal. Morning temps hovered in the 50s, warming into the upper 60s and low 70s as we ascended. Along the way, we passed several water sources, had no snow to deal with, and enjoyed clear, dry trail conditions. Once we reached the peak, it cooled down into the low 50s and upper 40s. At one point, we even got a brief flurry of hail, but the skies cleared by nightfall, revealing a starry sky. Thanks to our early start and steady pace, we had nearly half a day to soak it all in at the summit. We relaxed, took photos, scrambled over rocks, made a fire, and just sat in awe of the view. It was peaceful, surreal, and incredibly rewarding. Finding space for two tents was a bit of a challenge, as flat campsites are limited up there, but we made it work. There were virtually no bugs, and everything lined up for an ideal trip. We met a fellow backpacker named Ethan at the peak and had some great campfire conversation with him that evening, then continued our hike with him on the way down the next morning. This was one of the most memorable backpacking trips I’ve done — challenging, rewarding, and set at one of the most scenic campsites I’ve ever experienced. I’d go back in a heartbeat, and next time, I’m bringing friends.
