Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Piano Trio No. 38 in D major, Hob. XV:24 (1795) 00:00 - Allegro 07:34 - Andante 10:44 - Allegro, ma dolce Performed by the Beaux Arts Trio: Menaham Pressler (Piano), Isidore Cohen (Violin), and Bernard Greenhouse (Violoncello). "The D major Trio No. 38 was published in 1795, along with the F sharp minor (Hob. XV:26) and the G major (Hob. XV:25), by the London firm of Longman and Broderip. This English edition was dedicated to [Rebecca] Schroeter, [sister-in-law of Corona Schroeter,] known to us from Goethe's biography. When Haydn came to London for the second time, in 1794, he took a house close to Madame Schroeter's. During his first stay in London, the pupil-teacher relationship between them had developed into a warm friendship. "In this trio, the harmoniously free-ranging development of the main theme immediately catches the attention. In the three-part final movement, which follows on from a D minor andante, the even flow of the major is interrupted by a dramatic switch to the minor." - Hans Christoph Worbs Painting: [David Garrick] Between Tragedy and Comedy, Sir Joshua Reynolds
