Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, a Sephardic Jew from the Caliphate of Córdoba, embarked on a journey through Western and Central Europe in the mid-10th century. As a member of the Radhanite trading network, he traveled across Christian, Muslim, and pagan lands, documenting his observations in a rare and invaluable account. His writings provide the first known description of the Slavic world, detailing their customs, lands, rulers, and economy. His journey took him through Spain, France, and Germany before reaching the Slavic territories, where he encountered the Bohemians, Poles, Veleti, Obodrites, and other groups. Ibrahim describes the Slavs as strong yet divided, devoted to agriculture and trade. He recounts their harsh climate, unique marriage customs, and political landscape, listing rulers like Boleslav of Bohemia and Mieszko of Poland. He notes Prague as a thriving trade hub and details the wealth and military organization of Mieszko’s domain. His accounts also touch on the fearsome Prussians, the mysterious “City of Women,” and the fortified settlements of the Veleti and Obodrites. His observations offer a rare medieval perspective on a vast and dynamic region, shedding light on the economic and cultural exchanges between early medieval Europe and the Islamic world.
