As artificial intelligence continues to develop and seep into various professions, police departments and public safety agencies in Utah have started using the tool. 2News noticed a disclaimer at the bottom of a 10-page charging document written by the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. The department recently started using AI. Other departments have been using it much longer. “We've been using it over a year,” Moab City Police Chief Lex Bell said. “We signed a contract about last October or November, and we've been utilizing it ever since for report writing.” Chief Bell emphasized that the AI tool they’re using has been a significant time-saver and has increased accuracy in their reports. “So quality reports gone up,” Bell said. “The amount of time we spend actually working on reports has gone way down, which obviously gets us back out in the community to be dealing with other things a lot faster.” Moab City Police is using an AI product called Peach Safety, specifically designed for public safety agencies to assist with report writing. The product boasts various capabilities, including speech-to-text, investigative tools, and other analytical tools to take audio, body camera video, handwritten notes, and images to create reports.
