Footage captured on Thursday shows protesters shouting and honking motorcycle horns while security forces were deployed across the city to maintain order. Earlier, opposition candidate Issa @Tchiroma Bakary, a former minister and main challenger to long-time incumbent Paul Biya, declared himself the winner, calling on Biya to organise a 'smooth transition' to protect “the nation from upheavals and convulsions.” At least two people have been reported dead during the unrest. According to Interior Minister Paul Atanga Nji, more than 20 people have arrested, facing charges of 'incitement to rebellion and insurrection'. The country now awaits the official announcement of the election results by the Constitutional Council, expected on October 27, as President Biya, 92, who has ruled Cameroon for 43 years, runs for his eighth term.
