Digging up arid, compacted sandy soil.

The area I am digging up has never been tilled in more than 50 years, if ever. It is so compacted tree roots are growing 1 cm below the surface of the grass. One centimetre!!!! It is so compacted and dry I am struggling to dig deep. I have to keep soaking the soil to make it easier to dig up. This may take me a week. I could not have done this much work without the mask I was wearing. There's a bushfire raging more than 30km to the east, and Tenterfield has been engulfed in smoke for the passed two days.
